Understand Andersen’s different material strategies

“Andersen window” does not describe one frame construction. Andersen explains that wood is used for structure, interior appearance, and thermal qualities in several lines, often protected outside by cladding. Its 100 Series instead uses Fibrex, a proprietary composite made from wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. Those systems produce different profiles, finish choices, and maintenance considerations.

Begin with the room-facing goal: a stainable wood interior, a painted appearance, or a lower-maintenance composite surface. Then compare exterior exposure and sightlines. Do not assume that every color, species, hardware set, or operating type is offered in every Andersen series.

Match the series to the house

A traditional home may benefit from wood interiors, divided-light patterns, and trim proportions that respect existing openings. A contemporary remodel may favor the narrower profiles and dark finishes Andersen describes for 100 Series Fibrex products. The right decision comes from comparing actual cross-sections and samples—not simply selecting the most familiar brand tier.

Inventory what makes the existing façade coherent: sash proportions, sill projection, casing width, grille pattern, and alignment across grouped windows. Replacing one elevation without that study can create mismatched glass lines. Inside, consider stools, jamb extensions, shades, and whether new frame depth changes the finish carpentry.

Specify performance without guessing

Energy performance varies with series, operating type, unit size, and glazing. Request documentation for the exact configured window and verify its whole-unit U-factor and SHGC. U-factor addresses heat flow; SHGC addresses solar gain. A west-facing room with summer overheating may call for a different glazing discussion than a shaded north-facing bedroom.

Use current code and ENERGY STAR criteria as reference points, not marketing shorthand. Also discuss visible light, coatings, interior condensation conditions, and safety glass where required. No window contractor can responsibly guarantee a particular energy-bill reduction from a label alone.

Preserve character while rebuilding the drainage path

A retrofit can reduce disruption when the existing frame and water-management details are sound. Full-frame replacement is better suited to changing window type, correcting deterioration, restoring glass area, or rebuilding opening details. Investigation may reveal conditions that cannot be known from an indoor measurement.

Seattle-area wind-driven rain makes the exterior transition critical. The installation plan should address a sloped, supported sill; shingle-lapped flashing; head protection; compatible membranes and sealants; and connection to the wall’s water-resistive barrier. Exterior sealant is a maintenance joint, not the only defense against water.

Plan Andersen windows and siding together

A combined plan should define sequencing and responsibility for housewrap repairs, head flashing, trim finish, siding clearances, and interior touchups.

Before signing off, compare the schedule to local permit requirements as applicable. Approvals may also matter for condominiums, historic properties, or homeowner associations. Keep the final order, performance labels, care information, and written manufacturer warranty supplied for the exact products.
